Vinyl Windows

Fixed casement windows for larger openings

A fixed casement is a non-operating window built on a structural frame. It carries more load than a standard picture unit, which is what lets it span a larger opening without an intermediate post breaking up the view.

Where fixed casement windows suit a home

Fixed casements go where the opening is too big for an ordinary fixed unit to handle on its own. A wide living room front wall, the lower storey of a two-storey window wall, or a gable end that runs the full width of the room all put more load on the frame than a slim picture profile is built to take.

They matter most in combination assemblies. Where a large centre pane is mulled to operating units on either side, the centre is doing structural work as well as holding glass, and a fixed casement is the family designed for that job.

Because the frame profile matches the operating casements in the same collection, a fixed casement sits beside a C1 or CL1 with identical sightlines. That visual continuity is the reason to specify one rather than mixing families across a single elevation.

How they compare

Against a picture window: the picture unit is built on a slimmer profile and shows more glass for the same opening, but it is not designed to span as far. On a wide opening the fixed casement is the correct specification; on a modest one the picture unit gives the better view.

Against an operating casement: identical glass and identical frame appearance, without the hardware or the ventilation. Building code treats them differently, so a sleeping room still needs at least one operating unit for egress.

Against ultra slim picture units: opposite ends of the same idea. The ultra slim maximises glass on the thinnest profile we fit; the fixed casement maximises span.

Questions

Fixed Casement Windows: common questions

Read all 20 questions homeowners ask →

What is the difference between a casement window and a slider?

A casement window is hinged at the side and cranks outward, while a slider moves horizontally along a track. Casements seal tighter because the sash compresses against the frame when closed, which suits exposed walls and windy sites. Sliders cost less to operate and suit wide openings where a projecting sash would obstruct a walkway, deck or driveway.

Are ENERGY STAR windows worth it in Ontario?

Yes, ENERGY STAR qualified windows are certified to perform in Canada's climate zones, and they make the biggest difference in older homes with single-pane or failed double-pane glass. Low-E coatings and argon fill cut radiant heat loss in winter and solar gain in summer. Comfort improves immediately, particularly the cold draft near seating placed against an exterior wall.

How long do vinyl windows last?

Quality vinyl windows last several decades in Ontario's climate. Vinyl does not rot, rust or need repainting, and the frames will not blister, peel or flake the way a painted finish does, so the practical limit is usually the sealed glass unit rather than the frame itself. Cleaning the frames and glass twice a year is all the upkeep they need.
