Caledon homes we work on

Caledon is a rural township with a scattering of villages rather than a town: Caledon East, Inglewood, Alton, Belfountain, Palgrave, Cheltenham and Bolton. The housing that characterises it is the century stone and brick farmhouse, walls a foot and a half thick, deep window reveals, and openings that have shifted with the building for well over a century.

Alongside those are estate properties and custom homes on large parcels, many built to take advantage of escarpment views, and therefore glazed heavily on the elevation facing the weather.

The Niagara Escarpment, the Forks of the Credit and the Credit River valley run through the township and shape where and how houses sit.

What Caledon’s climate does to windows and doors

Caledon is high, open and genuinely exposed. The escarpment creates strong local wind effects, funnelling and accelerating air over the brow, and properties near the crest take loads that a sheltered suburban house never experiences.

Elevation also means snow. Caledon gets substantially more than Peel Region to the south, and it stays longer. Rural properties lose the mutual shelter that a subdivision provides, a farmhouse standing alone in open fields is a different thermal proposition entirely.

The river valleys add cold-air drainage and humidity in the low ground.

Styles that suit Caledon

Casement windows throughout on exposed properties. On escarpment sites this is not a preference; a running-clearance sliding sash will admit wind-driven rain under that pressure.

Century farmhouse openings need units built to the measured opening, and thick masonry reveals change how the frame is set and how the interior returns are finished. Every one is different and we measure every one.

For entrances, fibreglass doors with a stained oak grain suit the stone and brick material palette, and hold their finish far better than wood in this exposure.

Permits and approvals in Caledon

Like-for-like replacement requires no permit. Enlarging an opening or altering a header requires one from the Town of Caledon.

Caledon carries the densest overlay of any area we serve. The Niagara Escarpment Commission governs development within the escarpment plan area, Credit Valley Conservation and Toronto and Region Conservation Authority regulate land near watercourses, and the Greenbelt Plan covers much of the township. None of it governs replacing a window in an existing opening. All of it can govern anything more, and century farmhouses are frequently designated as well.

Questions

Caledon homeowners ask us

Read all 20 questions homeowners ask →

Why is there condensation on my new windows?

Condensation on the interior glass means the indoor humidity is higher than the glass surface temperature can support, not that the window has failed. New windows seal a house far more tightly than the ones they replace, so moisture that used to escape through leaks now stays inside. Running bathroom and kitchen fans and lowering the humidistat in cold weather resolves it. Moisture sealed between the panes is a different matter and is covered.

How long does window installation take?

Most whole-home window replacements are finished in one to three days. A single window typically takes 45 to 90 minutes from removal to trim and cleanup. The size of the job, the number of openings and whether exterior capping is involved set the pace. We confirm the schedule when you approve the quote, and the crew cleans and removes all old units before leaving.

How much disruption should I expect during installation?

Expect one or two openings to be affected at a time rather than the whole house. We work opening by opening, so each room is exposed for well under an hour while the rest of the house stays sealed and heated. Furniture near the window needs moving back about a metre and blinds or curtains taken down. Floors are protected and the site is cleaned before the crew leaves each day.
