Windows
How long do vinyl windows last?
Quality vinyl windows last several decades in Ontario's climate. Vinyl does not rot, rust or need repainting, and the frames will not blister, peel or flake the way a painted finish does, so the practical limit is usually the sealed glass unit rather than the frame itself. Cleaning the frames and glass twice a year is all the upkeep they need.
Do I need a permit to replace windows in Ontario?
No building permit is required to replace a window in its existing opening at the same size. A permit is needed when the opening is made larger or smaller, when a new opening is cut, or when the work affects a structural header. Heritage-designated properties have their own approval process. We flag any opening that needs a permit during the in-home consultation, before quoting.
Can windows be replaced in winter in Ontario?
Yes, windows can be replaced through an Ontario winter. Installers work one opening at a time, so the house is never broadly open to the cold and each room is exposed for well under an hour. Modern sealants and foams are formulated to cure at low temperatures. Winter is often the fastest time to book, since demand drops after the autumn rush.
How long does window installation take?
Most whole-home window replacements are finished in one to three days. A single window typically takes 45 to 90 minutes from removal to trim and cleanup. The size of the job, the number of openings and whether exterior capping is involved set the pace. We confirm the schedule when you approve the quote, and the crew cleans and removes all old units before leaving.
What is the difference between a casement window and a slider?
A casement window is hinged at the side and cranks outward, while a slider moves horizontally along a track. Casements seal tighter because the sash compresses against the frame when closed, which suits exposed walls and windy sites. Sliders cost less to operate and suit wide openings where a projecting sash would obstruct a walkway, deck or driveway.
Are ENERGY STAR windows worth it in Ontario?
Yes, ENERGY STAR qualified windows are certified to perform in Canada's climate zones, and they make the biggest difference in older homes with single-pane or failed double-pane glass. Low-E coatings and argon fill cut radiant heat loss in winter and solar gain in summer. Comfort improves immediately, particularly the cold draft near seating placed against an exterior wall.
Why is there condensation on my new windows?
Condensation on the interior glass means the indoor humidity is higher than the glass surface temperature can support, not that the window has failed. New windows seal a house far more tightly than the ones they replace, so moisture that used to escape through leaks now stays inside. Running bathroom and kitchen fans and lowering the humidistat in cold weather resolves it. Moisture sealed between the panes is a different matter and is covered.
How do I know when it is time to replace my windows?
Replace a window when the sealed unit has fogged, the frame has rotted or warped, or the sash no longer closes and locks properly. Persistent drafts, ice on the interior frame in winter, and condensation trapped between the panes all point to a failed unit rather than a repairable one. Difficulty opening a window is a safety issue where the opening serves as bedroom egress.
Doors
How long does it take to install a new entry door?
A standard entry door replacement takes three to five hours, including removing the old unit, setting and shimming the new frame, insulating, and fitting hardware. Doors that need a rebuilt or resized opening take longer and are sometimes staged over two visits. The opening is never left uncovered overnight. Exterior trim and caulking are completed the same day.
Is a steel or fibreglass entry door better?
Steel offers the best security and value, while fibreglass offers the best insulation and a convincing wood look. Steel doors are hot-dipped galvanized with a bonded polyurethane foam core and a solid wood lock block. Fibreglass doors use a compression-molded skin over a polyurethane core with roughly six times the insulating value of a solid wood door, and take stain over an oak grain finish.
Do steel entry doors rust in Ontario winters?
Properly finished steel doors do not rust in Ontario winters. The steel is hot-dipped galvanized before a factory-applied Polytex finish goes on, so the surface is protected twice over against corrosion and road salt. Rust appears where the finish has been cut, drilled or chipped and left unsealed. Touching up scratches promptly keeps the panel sound.
Can I install a storm door over a new entry door?
No, a storm door should not be fitted over a new entry door, because trapped solar heat builds up between the two panels and can warp the door or damage the finish. This applies to both steel and fibreglass units. If you want the extra draft protection a storm door offers, tell us at the consultation and we will address it through weatherstripping and sill adjustment instead.
What is the difference between a garden door and a sliding patio door?
A garden door swings open on hinges like a regular door, while a sliding patio door glides sideways on a track. Garden doors give a wider clear opening and a more traditional look, but need swing clearance inside or out. Sliders take no floor space at all, which matters on a small deck or in a tight dining room. Both are available with screens.
Are patio doors secure?
Modern patio doors are secure, using a recessed laminated steel lock on sliding units and a recessed astragal lock on garden doors, both carrying a lifetime replacement guarantee. The rolling sash cannot be lifted out of its track once locked, which was the weakness in older aluminium doors. Multi-point hardware and laminated glass options are available where security is the main concern.
Will a new entry door lower my heating bill?
A new entry door reduces heat loss, though the saving is smaller than replacing several windows because a door is one modest opening. The gain comes from the insulated core and, more importantly, from sealing the gap around a frame that has shifted or rotted. Most homeowners notice the missing draft across the floor before they notice the bill.
Can an entry door be made to fit a non-standard opening?
Yes, entry doors are custom-made to the opening rather than trimmed down from a stock size, which matters in older homes where a stock-size door will not fit. Century homes, converted side entrances and basement walk-outs frequently have short or narrow openings. We measure the actual opening at the consultation and build to it, so the brick and trim stay untouched.
Process and installation
How much disruption should I expect during installation?
Expect one or two openings to be affected at a time rather than the whole house. We work opening by opening, so each room is exposed for well under an hour while the rest of the house stays sealed and heated. Furniture near the window needs moving back about a metre and blinds or curtains taken down. Floors are protected and the site is cleaned before the crew leaves each day.
Do you take the old windows and doors away?
Yes, removal and disposal of the old units is included in the quoted price. The crew takes the frames, sashes and glass off site the same day rather than leaving them stacked in your driveway. Old aluminium and vinyl frames are separated for recycling where the material allows. Nothing is left for you to arrange or pay for separately afterwards.
What happens during a free in-home consultation?
We measure every opening, check the condition of the existing frames and sills, and talk through which window or door styles suit the house. You see the actual product samples, colours and glass options rather than a catalogue. You leave with a written quote covering product, installation and disposal. There is no obligation and no deposit taken at the visit.
How do I care for my new windows and doors?
Clean the vinyl frames and glass at least twice a year with mild soap and water. Avoid solvents and abrasive cleaners, and never paint or coat a vinyl frame. Stained doors benefit from a fresh clear coat every couple of years and the jamb resealed periodically. Keeping the weep holes clear stops water sitting in the sill track, which is the most common cause of avoidable trouble.
