Sliding patio doors that take no floor space
A sliding patio door glides sideways on a track, so it needs no swing clearance at all. On a small deck, a narrow balcony or a dining room where the table sits close to the wall; that is usually the whole argument.

Where sliding patio doors suit a home
Sliders are the practical answer for the rear wall of most GTA houses. The typical builder opening is wide and the space either side of it is spoken for, a barbecue on the deck, a table inside, and a hinged door would sweep through one or the other.
Both series share the essentials: an exterior sliding screen, maintenance-free extruded vinyl, triple weather seals, Low-E glass with argon fill, and a recessed laminated steel lock carrying a lifetime replacement guarantee. Optional internal mini blinds with a tilt-and-lift system sit between the panes, where they never need dusting.
The two series diverge on what they prioritise. The 6000 is the energy-efficiency line: ENERGY STAR qualified, with an end-jointed sash and frame system, high-performance seals and weatherstrips, and a sloped sill running into an aluminium track. The 7000 is the premium line, with a welded wide-sash system and thermally broken aluminium framing that resists greater wind loads.

How they compare
Against a garden door: the garden door swings and gives a wider clear opening for moving furniture; the slider needs no clearance and suits tight decks. On a windy elevation the slider is also easier to control, a hinged panel catches gusts.
6000 versus 7000: choose the 6000 when energy performance is the priority and the opening is a standard size. Choose the 7000 for a wide opening, an exposed elevation where wind load matters, or when you want the French-door look without French-door maintenance.
On security: the recessed steel lock means a locked sash cannot be lifted out of its track, which was the weakness in the older aluminium doors these usually replace.
What is the difference between a garden door and a sliding patio door?
A garden door swings open on hinges like a regular door, while a sliding patio door glides sideways on a track. Garden doors give a wider clear opening and a more traditional look, but need swing clearance inside or out. Sliders take no floor space at all, which matters on a small deck or in a tight dining room. Both are available with screens.
Are patio doors secure?
Modern patio doors are secure, using a recessed laminated steel lock on sliding units and a recessed astragal lock on garden doors, both carrying a lifetime replacement guarantee. The rolling sash cannot be lifted out of its track once locked, which was the weakness in older aluminium doors. Multi-point hardware and laminated glass options are available where security is the main concern.
How long does it take to install a new entry door?
A standard entry door replacement takes three to five hours, including removing the old unit, setting and shimming the new frame, insulating, and fitting hardware. Doors that need a rebuilt or resized opening take longer and are sometimes staged over two visits. The opening is never left uncovered overnight. Exterior trim and caulking are completed the same day.
